[4.4] Pages - settings

Settings for a given page can be accessed while editing a page and clicking on the 'page settings' button at the top right of the editing environment.

URL Slug

A URL slug is the final string of characters following your domain name and page path info that will appear in your user's address bar when they are visiting this page.

This will be auto-generated for you but it can be edited in settings if you feel appropriate.

An example of a URL slug - your page is called 'Staff Profiles' and it lives in the About us section of your website. The full automatically generated URL for this page would be:

www.yourdomain.com/about-us/staff-profiles

The URL slug for the Staff profiles page is: staff-profiles

This allows you to change the current page banner from the default. Changing this banner will also change it for any sub-pages which belong to the page you are editing, unless they are given their own specific banner too.

Note that not all website designs have a banner so in some cases this field is not required.

Sometimes you may need to depict a page in a graphical way - for example there is a content block option called a 'page gallery'. This creates a list of pages within a section that you define and displays them as a gallery of images. If you wish to use this content block then you would be wise to set a Gallery thumbnail for your pages. Typically these are photos that convey the spirit or content of the page.

Template

A given page can have it's appearance changed by choosing a different 'template'. These are created specifically to suit each website's design. Typically you will always have a 'Standard' template (which includes a sidebar) and a 'Full width' template (no sidebar) but you may have others depending on your needs.

Auto deactivate

This enables you to set a date when you want a given page to be hidden from public view. It essentially un-ticks the 'active' check box for the page on the date you specify. This generally happens around 1am in the morning depending on the web server configuation.

Metadata

Keywords: Edit/add keywords to help search engines index your webpage. Keywords will be placed in the page META tags. Note that keywords are ignored by most major search engines (Google, Bing etc) but this field is kept there for legacy engines and is sometimes used for other internal search tools.

Description: The description will be placed in the page META tags and gives your search engine some content to display when showing your page in a list of search results. If you don't enter content in your description META tag, the search engine will typically display the first content it finds on the page - which may not always be the most appropriate thing to display in a search result list.

Alt web-browser title: Will change the title that is used for the browser window (default web-browser title is the Name you originally gave your page).

Alt navigation title: Will change the text that is used in the website navigation bar and related links to represent the page.

Redirect

Allows you to redirect anyone who tries to access the page to another internal or external page.

Custom attributes

These are pieces of additional data associated with a page that can be defined and used almost any way you wish. The default attributes may or may not apply to your organisational needs. Feel free to review these attributes and contact us if you need more information on or wish to use them in a specific way

Who can view this page?

Here you can control who does and doesn't have access to view the page.

For example: you want to limit access to the page to only certain invited members of the public.

  1. You would first go to your 'Users' tab and create a category called (for example) 'Executive Committee'.
  2. Now you would add some users to that category
  3. Next you would edit the page settings under 'Who can view this page?', selecting 'Choose specific user groups' and then tick 'Executive Committee'.
  4. Now when someone goes to visit this page they will be asked to log in. The only users who will be able to successfully log in are those in the 'Executive Committee' category. Note that you can tick multiple user categories when defining these page permissions.

Who can view this page?

Here you can control who does and doesn't have access to manage the page, including yourself so you will want to be careful with this..

For example: you want to limit management of the page to only certain invited members of the public.

  1. You would first go to your 'Operators' area (click on the cog at top right of interface) and create a category called (for example) 'HR'.
  2. Now you would add some operators to that category
  3. Next you would edit the page settings under 'Who can manage this page?', selecting 'Choose specific operator groups' and then tick 'HR'.
  4. Now only operators of the category 'HR' will be able to manage this page. Note that you can tick multiple operator categories when defining these page permissions.

If you accidentally remove access to your administration group, leaving you unable to edit the page, contact Karmabunny to restore your access.

Saving Options

Active: Ticked means the page will be displayed on the website. Unticked means the page will not be displayed. You can change this at any point in the future. Active determines if the page is accessable at all.

Show in navigation: Ticked means the page will be shown in the website navigation. Unticked means the page will not be displayed in your navigation. You can change this at any point in the future. Note that even though a page is not displaying in the navigation, it can still be accessed if the person knows the URL for the page. To hide it completely you must use the 'active' page or set set specific page permissions.
